Aims to demonstrate the importance of IT in women′s career development with the LIS profession. Although many women feel inhibited by computers and do not have the same encouragement as men to learn IT skills, it has been found that women may be better at managing IT than men. Encourages women to enhance and develop computing expertise, by suggesting some practical steps, as well as briefly describing a new way of working, teleworking, which may help women to overcome the real barrier to their career progression – that of home caring responsibilities.

The College for the Distributive Trades library took a gamble in the Summer of 1987 and chose an automated library system that had never been tested in the UK although it was being used widely in the United States and in the Republic of Ireland. The system selected was the Data Trek Card Datalog system . It was installed on the College's main site at Leicester Square, London a year ago and this article shares the College's experience of the planning, installation and management of this system.

Copyright is frequently mentioned at library IT conferences as a slight problem to be overcome. Instead, this article affirms that it is a major impediment which affects all players in the electronic information chain. Problems are reviewed both from the point of view of information professionals and copyright holders. The author suggests that librarians could take on the role of ‘emulsifier’ in mixing copyright and information.

Even though many libraries now have sales counters where postcards (usually reproductions of old views) and some local histories (usually published by the library itself — like Northamptonshire Libraries' new, profusely illustrated and documented Waterways of Northamptonshire) are on sale, few if any have proper shops dispensing a full range of printed material on local topics (do send details if they exist).
